You have your shortlist of 5-10 journals. Now, you must investigate each one. This vetting process is your best defense against a quick "desk rejection" (an instant rejection by the editor before peer review) for not matching the journal's focus or rules.

For each journal on your list, find the answers to these questions.

## 1. Check for "Topical Fit"

This is the most important step. Go to the journal's website and find the page labeled "Aims and Scope" or "About the Journal."

This page is the journal's mission statement. It tells you exactly:

What topics it covers (e.g., "clinical infectious diseases," "basic immunology").
What topics it does not cover (e.g., "no case reports," "no animal studies").
Who the intended readership is (e.g., "specialist surgeons," "public health policymakers," "general practitioners").

Ask yourself: Does my specific research question fall directly within these stated aims? Is my paper written for this exact audience?

## 2. Check for "Practical Fit"

Next, find the "Author Guidelines" or "Instructions for Authors." This is the journal's rulebook. Ignoring it is the fastest way to get rejected.

Look for these practical constraints:

Article Types: Does the journal publish your type of study? (e.g., Original Research, Review Article, Case Report, Brief Communication). Do not send a Case Report to a journal that clearly states it doesn't accept them.
Word Limits: What is the maximum word count for your article type? What about the abstract?
Formatting: How must the manuscript be structured (e.g., IMRAD - Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion)? How many tables and figures are allowed?
Copyright: What kind of copyright or licensing agreement do they use?

## 3. Check for "Contextual Fit"

This is a more advanced step. Go to the journal's latest issue and skim a few recent articles.

Writing Style: Does your writing style match the tone of the articles?
Relevant References: Look at the reference list in your own paper. Have you cited several articles from this journal? If you have, it's a very good sign that your work is part of the same conversation.

## 4. Match Your Paper's Impact to the Journal's Rank

Finally, you need to be honest about your own work. Here is a checklist to help you gauge the impact level of your paper.

High-impact journals are looking for papers that can answer "yes" to most of these questions.

Your Paper's Self-Checklist:

Novelty: Is this work highly original and new?
Significance: Does it have real-world importance?
Application: How soon could these findings be applied in a clinical or policy setting?
Changing Practice: Does this work have the potential to change international practice or policy?
Changing Thinking: Does it have the potential to change how researchers in your field (or other fields) think about this topic?
Method Quality: Is your study quality high? Are biases minimized? Does it comply with all research and ethics guidelines?

If your work is highly novel and has the potential to change international practice, aim for those top-tier journals. If your work is still valuable but more incremental, or confirms previous findings, or is of major local (but not international) importance, a specialized journal may be a much better and faster route to publication.
